Indeed, this is a film that brings to life such boring Biology class topics as the food chain by slapping you right in the middle of a feeding frenzy. To say that the animals and incidents they encounter produce intense drama is like calling the Pacific a paddling pool. Instead, Byatt and Fothergill have simply recorded what they encountered while going where few men have gone before. three huge great white sharks are spotted off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, where white sharks are rarely seen. There’s no forced comedy or tortured melodrama. This nature documentary shows the lives of different animals in and near the oceans that make up two-thirds of the planets surface. This is no Disney-fied documentary, however. These experiments provide the predatory animals with heightened intelligence, inadvertently causing the sharks. The overall plot of the series centers around scientific studies conducted by marine biologists. Join a voyage through aquatic realms where humans have rarely dared to go. The Deep Blue Sea film series consists of American science fiction natural - horror films, centered around genetically enhanced - sharks. scientists hope to learn about these very large sharks. With Michael Gambon, David Attenborough, Pierce Brosnan, Frank Glaubrecht. What is believed to be the largest great white shark, named Deep Blue. Of course, those who remember the days when wildlife films were regularly shown before main features might feel a little nostalgic watching Deep Blue. Deep Blue: Directed by Andy Byatt, Alastair Fothergill. Such a flaw is, however, but a drop in the ocean. This is literally as close as you will get to exploring the depths this side of stealing a submarine.ĭeep Blue is a little let down by Michael Gambon’s narration, which is so sparse that one wonders why the directors didn’t do away with it altogether. So she’s an old, beautiful shark, but no one can unequivocally claim she is biggest. And while many of the animals here are familiar, both the locations and the clarity of the camerawork represent foreign territory. Domeier’s team first documented Deep Blue in 1999 and she was already big back then, he continued. Effectively a compilation of the most memorable and dramatic moments from the acclaimed BBC series ‘The Blue Planet’, Andy Byatt and Alastair Fothergill’s film marries the vigour of an action film with the sweep of epic cinema.Īll ocean life is here, from dolphin and shark to shrimp and penguin, from the beasts that live on the very fringes of the sea to the monsters that can be only found in the sunless fathoms. The Blue Planet series was my first introduction to deep sea (and nature) documentaries, and it is the source of my enthusiasm for those that have come out since then. From Jacques Cousteau’s Oscar-winning features The Silent World and World Without Sun to Luc Besson’s bends-inducingAtlantis, the big screen is the natural place to document the wide expanses of the high seas.ĭeep Blue is every bit the equal of its acclaimed forerunners. Cinema has long had an interest in the might and majesty of the open sea.

Unless you're a graphic designer, chances are that you need vertical space more than horizontal space. You have documents where each page fits the width of your screen but you have to scroll down to see the bottom of the page. You look at websites which generally have a fixed width (which is smaller than the width of your screen) but websites almost always expand beyond the screen vertically. Think about the things you do on your computer. Even though monitors keep getting wider and shorter for some reason, the vertical space on your desktop is much more important than the horizontal space. Vertical space is more important than horizontal space This is by far the most important advantage to moving the taskbar to the side of the screen. I want to briefly explain why you should give the vertical taskbar a chance. Windows and OSX both let you move the taskbar (just click and drag it in windows - I don't know how to use Macs so you're on your own there). From a UI standpoint it makes way more sense to have that bar running along the left or right side of the screen instead of across the bottom. Have you ever wondered why it runs along the bottom of the screen? Well I have. It's the core UI element in any desktop operating system. It's a place to show you running applications and launch new applications. In Windows it's called the "taskbar" and Mac OSX calls it the "dock", but the idea is the same on both. I’ll try to reply as soon as possible. Both Windows machines and Macs come with a toolbar that runs across the bottom of the screen. If you have any doubt, ask me in the comment section. The aim of this page is to serve as a database to which interested readers can refer in their attempts to decipher Pynchon's songs, and ultimately to better understand his novels. With many minds serving as the eyes and ears for such a project it may be possible for other tunes to be connected. Such a connection implies that Pynchon could have written the M&D song intentionally to fit with the tune and melody from "Love Lifts Us Up." This possibility opens up the opportunity for a surmountable research effort, the aim of which would be to discover which other of Pynchon's lyrics fit to existing songs (such research is par for the course when attempting to decode any Pynchon novel). On this topic reference must be made to the collaborative band, The Thomas Pynchon Fake Book, who have composed and performed music to many of the songs written for GR.Īn interesting discovery was made by someone in the Pynchon community that connects a song from Mason & Dixon to "Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong" (the Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes duet from An Officer and a Gentleman). Though present in nearly all of Pynchon's novels, more attention has been paid to the songs in Gravity's Rainbow over any other (probably as a mere consequence of the book's overwhelming clout). Oh, the way that gravity pulls on you and me.Īnd the way that gravity pushes on everyone,Īs you can see, they're completely different pretty much.Pynchon loves to embed song lyrics into the text of his stories, but why? He won't look down, he won't give up hope and getting this person back. He gets hope that she will someday be back.Īnd throughout the song, he talks of them having troubles, and they feel let down, they will always be their for them. And he looks up at the sun, and the sky, and gets this glimpse of hope, that she will be back. They go through a hard break-up, and he misses her so much. Have you ever thought that maybe it's about an ex- girlfriend? to me, it is. The song can be interpreted with Chris' version as gravity pulling him and the one he loves back together.
